Authoritative Parenting Style

Our parenting style will affect how our children develop, their personality traits, and their behaviors. The primary three parenting styles are authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. This article concentrates on authoritative parenting.

Authoritative parents typical allow their kids to develop a sense of freedom. This parent will encourage their child to develop decisions on their own. However, this type of parent is not afraid to enforce guidelines and rules.

The authoritative parenting style can be a complicated balance between allowing your children their freedom, yet maintaining structure and discipline. The ultimate goal is a sense of balance that will help you develop a close relationship with your kids, while allowing them a sense of autonomy.

Parents will develop clear guidelines that are communicated to the child. While the child’s decision making skills and maturity grows, the parent will begin to exercise some flexibility in the rules. It is important to allow your child to have some input in decision making processes. Hearing their input will allow you to respond and help them develop logic.

Conflict between parent and child are typically low with this style of parenting. By listening to your child’s input you are encouraging them to think outside of the box and explain what they think and feel. You should continually question their logic and explanations in a caring way, while avoiding any condescension.

This can be a useful method for teenagers. It will allow them to develop a sense of independence as they build their own identity. They will not become as rebellious because they understand that you listen to them and consider their input, yet they know that you hold the final word in any decision.

The authoritative parenting style is generally considered the best parenting style. It will allow the child a sense of autonomy while increasing their thinking skills and logic. The most important aspect of this method is to develop a mutual trust for one another.
