Authoritarian Parenting Style

The authoritarian parenting style is one of three parenting styles that affect our child’s development and mental growth. The other two styles are the authoritative and permissive parenting styles.

The authoritative style focuses on controlling your child. Generally the parents only care about having their expectations met, yet think that this is for the good of the child. This method is one of strict obedience.

Parents that utilize this method expect their children to perform whatever task they are told without any form of explanation. If an explanation is offered, the parents are usually not open to discussion. This can often lead to resentment in the child which can cause them to act out or rebel.

The parent tries to exercise complete control over the child. Usually when the child does not do as they are told, the punishment does not fit the crime. Parents will punish their kids more harshly than they deserve. This is usually because the parents are more upset that their orders were not followed than the actual behavioral problem of the child.

This style prevents the child from developing a since of autonomy. In addition it creates a false since of closeness between the parent and child. The child may become dependent on the parent and may act out or not know how to handle situations when their parent is not around. Children raised under this style often suffer from anxiety and depression later in life.

The authoritarian parenting style can lead to rebellion and can hinder a child’s mental development. There is often a strong sense of conflict between the parent and the child. These children will tend to act out more when not around their parent and may develop additional problems as they reach adulthood as they never developed a sense of independence.
